Krysteen,
Here goes, could be a long one.....
Night Shift, 1978, 323pgs.
Contains twenty stories. Some of which the following films were based upon:
Night Shift
The Mangler
Maximum Overdrive
Golden Years
The Lawnmower Man
Children of the Corn
In an earlier post, I had mentioned the tale One for the Road, which was an epilogue to Salem's Lot. There is also a tale here titled Jerusalem's lot, which serves as the prologue which takes place some two hundred years before the events in the Lot.
Different Seasons, 1982, 507 pgs.
Contains four novellas. Three were filmed as:
Apt Pupil
Stand By Me
The Shawshank Redemption
Skeleton Crew, 1985, 573 pgs.
Contains 22 tales. This one kicks off with the excellent novella The Mist. Allegedly, a screenplay is in development.
Four Past Midnight, 1990, don't have it in my posession, so i'm unsure of pg. count.
Contains four novellas. This is where The Langoliers and Secret Window came from.
Nightmares and Dreamscapes, 1993, 692 pgs.
Contains twenty three stories. The Night Flier came from this one.
He did write Hearts in Atlantis in 1999, there are five tales here, and in a way they are intertwined, so I look at this as more of a novel than a collection.
Then he did Everything's Eventual in 2002.
I'd just read them in the order they came out. Also keep in mind the stories are far superior to the films that they were based on.
Lastly, may I suggest Cycle of the Werewolf from '85?
It's a hundred and twenty eight pages long, and is accompanied by some truly wonderful artwork by the gifted Bernie Wrightson.
From 1977-1984, King wrote five novellas under the psuedonym Richard Bachman. Four were collected as The Bachman Books, and the longest was released as Thinner at 318 pgs.
If you have an independent comic shop near you, they tend to have used Horror/Fantasy/Sci-Fi paperbacks on the cheap.
Hope this long-winded post helped.
Enjoy!
