A sinking sun behind the mountain tops signaled the end of another day. Soon the moon would take its place amongst the heavens and another night would begin. Tyessas stony appearance melted away in the moonlight as life once again filled her body. Gargoyles considered it a blessing when theyre entombed souls woke to live again. This was not the case with Tyessa. She should have been happy to of survived the daytime unscathed, but the sadness looming inside her heart made her wonder if it really even mattered. A trickle of blood ran down the corner of her mouth as she bit down on her lip to keep it from trembling. Yes. She was alive. But she was the last remaining member of her tribe.
It had been at least a week since Brendell the Wise had sacrificed his life to save Tyessa. And yet the memory of it all was still so fresh that she could have sworn it happened only but a night ago. Go! Brendells last words echoed inside her head. Go now lass! Dont let the life blood of our clan be extinguished this night! Go now! And always hold to our code!
Our code. Tyessa spat the words out as if it tasted bad to speak them. She wanted to hate Brendell for even mentioning it. Why she should continue guarding a race that both hated and hunted her kind was a concept that Tyessa would never understand. No. Her grief stricken heart had grown cold and numb. Humans are no longer worthy enough to receive gargoyle protection. And so they must pay for their crimes against us.
A silvery glow from the moon illuminated the dull gray coloring of Tyessas skin as she flew above the trees in search for signs of humans. The fruitless hunt only seemed to fuel the flame of her growing disdain for mankind. Minutes seemed like hours and still nothing. Cowards! Tyessa mentally cursed them. Where are they. She wanted to fight. She wanted to maim. She wanted to kill the pain that was growing inside her heart. Onward she flew into the darkness. Ever determined to catch her pray.
At long last the humans gave up their hiding place as a light smell of smoky pine wafted through the air. It was too light of a scent to be a forest fire. It had to be man. Although Tyessa seemed outwardly pleased, her inner workings plotted to betray everything she was ever taught. Her mind began to cloud with a dangerous mix of hatred and revenge. Her heart began to pound so hard against her chest that it felt like it might burst. All of her combative training, all of her reasoning and good judgment melted their way out of her senses. And that was when Tyessa did the unthinkable. She dropped down from the sky on all fours; right in the middle of her human quarry. She didnt care how many there were. She didnt care what kind of weapons they had. She didnt care if she would even make it out alive.
What the devil! One man shouted out in surprise. Eht tis the devil! Exclaimed another. Tyessa snapped her head up and hissed at the insults. And the men took up their arms to destroy the ungodly beast before them.
Without warning, Tyessas long tail whipped through the air; knocking a heavy set man off his feet. His very breath deserted his lungs as he fell hard on his back. Two other men charged up from either side. Their weapons, a wooden club and a hand axe, were brandished high above their heads. With all the grace of a cat, Tyessa dropped to the ground and rolled onto her back. Her clawed feet grabbed one of the men as she whirled around, taking him into her spin. His body became a shield just in time to take a full blow from the downward striking axe.
Using all the strength of her legs, Tyessa tossed the corpse onto the second man. He stumbled backwards and fell under the weight of his deceased companion; buying Tyessa enough time to get to her feet. From the sheath hanging off her hip, Tyessa pulled forth a dagger and headed towards the downfallen man. Out of the darkness, a small knife throne by an unseen hand buried itself deep into Tyessas right shoulder. She screamed a womans scream as she let go of her own weapon. The heavyset man, still a bit dazed from his fall, had already made it back to his feet. And seeing the opportunity, he grabbed Tyessa from behind; pinning her wings and arms tight against her body.
A small wiry man flew to aid of the man on the ground. Shes wounded. He spoke in a rushed voice full of fear. We should hide and wait out the night. Then in the morning crush the beast into rubble. Were no match against a breathen gargoyle. Not even a female one.
Are you daft! The man grabbed a fist full of the others shirt. Did you not see the gold that thing wears about her arm and leg. If we kill her while shes stone then we can nah claim it for our own. The gold will be stone too. Weve barely made a cent from this caper as it is. Do you want to go back to starven in the woods? I says we finish er off now.
Ehts madness Sean. Theres only three of us now. Shell kill us sure as she did poor William here.
You said it yourself Archie. Shes wounded. Tom has got her locked up good and proper. We can take her Arch. But not while standen round ere talken about it. Without any regard for his fallen friend, Sean pulled his axe from the dead mans back. I want that gold. The gleam of greed flickered in Seans eyes as he moved in towards the gargoyle. Ehts a bad idea. Archie muttered to himself as he followed Sean. I ken feel it in me bones.
The pain radiating from Tyessas wound seemed to dilute the rush of adrenalin that had been spurring her on. She knew that her strength was greater then any humans and yet she could not break free of the vice like grip. The best she could do was to wait for any opportunities to escape.
Again Sean raised his axe to strike down upon the beast. A terrible evilness lurked in his eyes as he focused all of his attention on Tyessa. In so doing, he took no notice of what looked like feeble attempts to squirm out of the embrace. But Tyessa had a plan. If I can only get a little leverage. She thought to herself. Using all of her strength, Tyessa began to lean back against her captor. Oh no you dont! Toms strained voice growled in her ear. He took half a step backwards to brace himself firmly against the gargoyles attempt to out muscle him. But that was all Tyessa needed to gain the upper hand.
As soon as Sean got close enough, Tyessa raised her right leg to the level of his chest. Before he even had time to react; Sean found himself flying backwards from Tyessas kick. Archie had just barely gotten out of the way when Sean fell hard against the ground for a second time. Without hesitation, Tyessa took advantage of Toms open legged stance. With her tail already in place, she flicked it upwards as hard as she could. The pain in Toms groin forced him to loose his grip on the gargoyle as his body buckled forward at the waste. She was free. With a mighty shove, Tyessa pushed the big man down into the fire pit. Toms screams of agony grew louder as his body ignited into flames. And then he screamed no more.
Archie stood frozen in terror as he watched the gargoyle pull his knife from her shoulder. I knew this was a bad idea. He whispered solemnly to himself. In just a matter of seconds, Archie slumped to the ground in a heap as the knife buried itself deep inside his chest.
Tyessas eyes narrowed as she glared down at the last man. Low growls resonated from her throat as she made her way towards him. A drop of blood dripped to the ground as her long nails sliced into the palm of her closed fist. Her hatred was rekindled.
Sean had never known a greater terror then what he felt just then. Death was coming for him. And he knew it. Like a frightened child, Sean began to stumble crawl backward until he could gain enough control over his actions to try and get to his feet. But it was too late for any fool hearted attempt to escape. Tyessa only let the man get to his feet so that it would be easier for her to seize him by the throat. Fire burned in her eyes as she watched Sean gasping for air. Mentally turning all the pain from her wounded shoulder into anger; Tyessa lifted Sean off the ground and dangled him in mid air until the last spark of life vanished from his eyes.
It was all over now. She had won. And yet Tyessa felt no different from when she first awoke from stone that night. There was no hearty slap on the back from a comrade at arms. There was no gathering of kin by the fireside to regale her adventure to. There wasnt even an elder to scold her for what she had done wrong. It was just Tyessa. And as far as she knew, she was all that there ever would be again.
Seans lifeless body thumped the ground as Tyessa released her grip on him. His death had changed nothing. The emptiness of losing her entire clan was still burning a hole in Tyessas heart. Tears rolled down her face as she lowered her head in self pity. Only the cool night air was there to hold her in her time of need.
The soft music of a forest at night was disrupted by sounds of something moving about in the shadows. At first Tyessa was too busy wallowing in her misery to take any heed. But her ears soon perked up at hearing a light thud against something hollow. Tyessa began to scan her surroundings for the first time. Before, she had been so consumed with hatred that she never once took notice of the situation she had dropped in on. Remnants of human belongings were scattered haphazardly along the ground. It was all to clear to Tyessa that something other then her onslaught had taken place here. This new discovery brought back memories from her earlier days of training. Back when her father taught her what signs to look for when humans were in need of a gargoyles help.
Humans can be very confusing. The voice of Tyessas father filled her head. They will pray upon themselves in times of desperation. Or in attempts to control one another.
But why father? Tyessa recalled asking. Why would they treat each other so shamefully?
There are no reasons why my child. Only that it is so. Its just a part of who they are. And we must try to see past their imperfections to do what we can to help them. For that is our way.
No! Tyessa shut her eyes tight and covered her ears. Its just more of the same code of honor. Her thoughts tried to drown out the voices of the past. And look where that got us. The old ways no longer apply. We need to fight if we are to survive. A sudden chill ran down her back. We. She whispered out loud; almost choking on the word.
Another soft thump broke the spell of Tyessas remorseful repose. Quickly, she looked toward the direction of the sound. There, half in the shadows was the face of a young girl. She couldnt have been more then 8 years old. Her outstretched hand reached for something in the dim edges of the campfires glow. My dagger! Tyessa blared out once the child had grabbed hold of the weapon. The little girl gasped in terror at being discovered and quickly disappeared into the shadows of the night; taking Tyessas dagger with her.
Breeda ran as fast as her little legs would carry her. The sound of her heavy breathing cut through the air. The patter of her little feet stumbled their way through the darkness. At that moment, she wanted nothing more then to keep running into the night. But alas, she dared not. At least, not without her grandfather.
Grandpa? Grandpa where are you? She whispered as loud as she dared to. A muffled sound guided her steps to a cluster of trees near a small moonlit clearing. Breeda shuttered slightly at how the light made him look so pale and weak. Grandpa we have to hurry. Her fingers were already searching the shadow side of the tree for the rope that bound him to it. She ran the blade across the coils of rope as fast as she could; only stopping long enough to look up and see if the monster had found them yet. With his newly freed hand; the old man pulled the gag away from his mouth. Praises to God on high that he has kept you safe. He cupped the girls cheek with his hand and smiled. My little Breeda.
But Breeda could not share in her grandfathers delight. She knew what was coming for them and did not want to linger on such joyous sentiments. Please. She begged; tugging at his arm. Please lets go. I dont want to be here anymore. Im afraid.
Tyessa treaded light on her feet as she crept into the darkness. Her wings were held up and open just in case she was ambushed and needed a fast escape. She wasnt sure just how many more humans there were lurking about in the woods and thought it best to be prepared. It wasnt long before she came to the edge of the clearing. When Tyessa was sure that it was only the girl and an old man; she ventured forth into the moonlight. She indented to retrieve her dagger one way or another. It was the only thing she had that once belonged to her father. And she wanted it back. Tyessa stood at her full height, wings flared out, glaring at the human child.
Breeda had just managed to get her grandfather to his feet when she saw the gargoyle standing in the moonlight. Instinct told her that she would be perceived as a threat as long as she held a weapon in her hands. Though she trembled with fear, Breeda tossed the dagger aside in hopes that they would be allowed to leave unharmed. Her eyes never left the ominous sight of the monster as she tugged at her grandfathers arm. We need to go now Grandpa. She whispered.
Can it be? The old mans voice echoed when his poor, tired eyes saw a winged creature shimmering with a silver glow. Aaahhhh! He exclaimed with reverence. I have prayed for a miracle and God has sent us one of his angels. He then fell to his knees to worship his all mighty God. Bless you a thousand times over my saving angel.
Angel? Tyessa was stunned. Of all the things she had ever been called before, that one angered her the most. You think me an angel! She roared. I am Tyessa of the Rathul Naukth tribe! She strode proudly towards the old man. Daughter of Gandash, guardian of the old world! I am a gargoyle! Tyessa bellowed in his face. She had half a mind to cut him down right there with just one swipe of her claws. It is in the name of your God that my people have been slaughtered all these years! No old man! Your God, She recoiled in disgust. Did not send me.
Tyessa was so repulsed by the audacity of such a notion that she spat at the ground. How dare he compare me to an agent of the One God! She thought. Her agitation was not about to disburse as a strong desire to defend her people manifested itself. Gargoyles have always been the protector of mankind. Her voice rung with anger. We were the mediators between good and evil. We have fought for you! We have bled for you! We were cur. Tears began to form in her eyes as she paused and looked away. Her breasts heaved with long labored breaths. We were cursed, Pain had replaced the anger in her voice. To a half life of stone when we foiled the wizard Dorenoks attempt to suspend the world in darker times. And how do you repay us? By casting us aside and deeming us evil? Because we dont look like you? By. By butchering us when we are most vulnerable? The words she spoke cut her insides like a knife. All her life these words burned holes in the dark corners of her mind. They ate away at her sole and faded away the meaning behind her beliefs. Why? She begged for an answer. We were never the monsters that your faith has told you we were.
Tyessa was both relieved and distressed to finally let out what had been pent up for so long. It was something that her people never spoke of. Sure, they felt the pain of their shrinking numbers, but they refused to abandon the old code. They would not strike back. Only the younger generations dared to dream of a retribution. But Tyessa had tasted that dream earlier this night. And there was no sweetness to it. Her heart had been cold for so long. Her soul had long been empty. She wanted to die. How do you choose to leave this world Tyessa? Her thoughts tried to console her grief. Tyessa looked to the sky and found her answer. Dawn was coming. She could already feel the stiffness spreading throughout her body. She had no place to hide. She did not want to hide. Glancing back at the humans in front of her; she spoke in a calmed voice. Do your worst old man. The rays of approaching sunlight quickly turned Tyessa into a stone statue of herself.
Still on his knees, Eris lowered his head and shed a tear for the gargoyle. He was greatly moved by the conviction in her voice. He had seen how some men twisted and used the word of God to do ungodly things. Could it be that she spoke in sooth? He pondered long and hard on the question before making his way to his feet again. What should we do grandpa? Breeda asked as she clung to his arm.
Im not sure. He whispered.
Shes not really a monster is she? Breeda looked up into Eriss face for an answer. If she really was a monster she would have killed us right? A childish innocence graced her face. Breeda reached out her hand to touch Tyessa. She feels so cold. Will she have to stay that way forever?
Eris close his eyes tight and took a deep breath. It was time for him to make a decision. He trembled slightly as his thoughts wrestled back and forth. Then finally he spoke. Go and fetch as much of our things as possible. Breeda looked sharply up at her grandfather. Eris gently patted the back of her head and bade her to go on. Breeda soon disappeared through the trees. But she did not leave as her grandfather instructed her. Instead, she hide behind one of the trees and watched silently from a distance.
I know that my eyes have been fading these past years O Lord. He spoke aloud. But why did she appear to me as an angel? Even after admitting to be a beast. Tears streamed down his face. She still looked to me as one of your own. How can that be Lord? Please. Show me what to do.
Eris needed to see what Tyessa really was. Yet he could not trust his eyes to tell him. And so he did the only other thing that he could have done. Eris closed his eyes and reached out towards Tyessas stony form. He would let his hands be his eyes.
Eris quickly pulled his hand back upon the first touch. He hadnt expected her face to feel so smooth and yet so stiff. It reminded him of the way his own wifes face felt when he touched her cheek for the very last time. After regaining his composure, he placed his finger tips where Tyessas forehead should be. Then he proceeded to feel the whole of her face. Her eye ridges protruded out only slightly more then what a humans would. Instead of hair for eyebrows, she had four small raised lumps that gradually faded away from the corners of her eyes. Her cheek bones were high and lead into what he though might be a short muzzle. But nothing seemed so grossly exaggerated as Eris had expected. She had a full upper and lower lip that was curved slightly down in a saddened expression of sorrow. A small rounded chin completed her face.
He felt the top of her head. His hands stumbled across a set of small horns that pointed toward the back of her skull. They couldnt have been more then 3 or 4 inches in length and were partially covered by what could only be long smooth hair. Eriss fingers followed the curves of what was wind blown locks of shoulder length hair. His hands slid down over her shoulder. There on her left upper arm was something that felt like an elaborately decorated armband.
Eriss hands told him much about what Tyessa looked like. She wore a light weight cloth that pleated over the curves of her bosom. A bare midriff exposed the sleekness of her abdomen. A long skirt with slits on either side of her thighs reveled that she did indeed had haunches. But she also had feet with toes. Not hooves like demons were believed to have. On her right calf, Eris fumbled his hands over another elaborate band that he believed to be a match to the one on her arm. She did have a long thick tail. But it did not have a sharp point at the tip like he was expecting. Rather it ended in just a simple rounded edge. When Eris had a good idea of what she looked like in his mind, he stood up before her and whispered softly. If I were a gargoyle. I would say that you were beautiful Tyessa.
The warmth of a well tended fire greeted Tyessa as life filled her body once again. A smell of roasted rabbit filled the air. Is this a dream? She wondered. She had never know such pleasantries upon waking from her tomb of stone. Her mind raced to remember all that had happened the night before. I should be dead. Came her startled realization. Tyessa quickly touched her face to confirm that she was indeed alive. But how? Why? Her eyes widened with confusion.
The sound of a twig snapping from behind sent Tyessa spinning around to see who was there. It was the old man from the night before. Ive saved you some food from our supper if youll take it. He held out a small plate with some cooked meet on it. It isnt much I know. But what we have we will gladly share with you. Tyessa was slow to take the plate. She was still unsure about what to think. She bowed her head slightly to the man out of respect for her traditions; then sniffed at the food. Her stomach grumbled loud at the scent. Though it had been two nights since she last ate; the shame of what she had done dulled her appetite.
Why? She finally asked. Why did you not kill me when you had the chance?
Eris took a deep breath and then exhaled. He looked at the ground for some time; trying to find an answer. When he finally looked up and into Tyessas eyes; he whispered. Because it didnt feel right.
Tyessa felt the weight of her disgrace baring down upon her. She knew that what she had done the night before was not right. But at the time she didnt care. Why should I be spared such mercy when I could not give it myself? A single tear ran down her cheek.
It is said, Eris spoke up. That the Lord works in mysterious ways. I know that you are not an angel. But it was still you that saved my granddaughter and me from those thieves who would have surely killed us in the end. And for that. I am grateful to you. He gave her a sweet smile.
How could this be? Tyessas mind raced with thoughts. I almost killed him last night and here he acts so gracious towards me. Her head began to swim with confusion. It made no sense to her. She had always believed humans to be so barbaric. So intolerant of anything that was different from themselves. And so quick to pass judgment against what they did not understand.
Tyessa felt a soft tug on her down folded wing. She turned to see the little girl looking up at her. In the palm of her hand; Breeda held up the dagger that she had used to cut her grandfather free. This belongs to you. Came a soft voice. Not knowing what else to say; Breeda just smiled and waited for the gargoyle to take back her dagger.
Tyessa was so astonished that she could not break her gaze of the little girl. She looks so different without any traces of fear in her eyes. Perhaps. She glanced away from the girl for a second before looking back. Perhaps. I have been wrong.
Thank you. Tyessa spoke in earnest as she reached for her dagger. It had been a very long time since she had felt a desire to smile. So she did not let the opportunity to do so pass her by. And then something completely unexpected happened. The hurt that had been feeding off of her soul for so long didnt seem to be there anymore. The heavy feelings of sadness were not bearing down upon her shoulders. The brighter Tyessas smile grew; the more the hole in her heart began to fill up. Happiness had found a home inside of her.
After finishing her meal; Tyessa searched for a place where she could just sit down and gaze up at the moon. A great many things had filled her head. Things that she had once tried to keep out of her mind. Things that she knew she should never have turned away from. And as she sat there amongst her ponderings; the old man came and sat down next to her. At first, neither of them spoke. But rather, they just enjoyed each others company and quietly listened to the enchanting melody of nights music.
I have forgotten, Tyessa finally broke the silence. Just how beautiful the moon can be. Eris smiled and placed his hand on top of Tyessas hand; patting it softly as if he were comforting his own daughter. Tyessa smiled to herself when she realized that she didnt mind the gesture. Ive been thinking. She looked into the old mans eyes. My life has strayed so far from what my people believe in. I used to think they were fools to follow the ridiculous notion of sparing the lives those who pursued them. I see now that I am the one who has been a fool. She took Eriss hand into hers and gently squeezed it. You and your granddaughter have shown me that there is a goodness in your people. I was always so blinded by mans bad traits that I could not see that there was also good. She smiled then looked back towards the moon. My people have a saying. In your tongue it translates. Do not dwell on what can not be undone. But live for the chance to make it right again. I have done much to bring shame to myself and my people. But. From this time on. I will do what I can to make it right again. Tyessa turned back to the old man and smiled brightly. Come what may. I will honor my peoples code. And become the protector of man that I should have been.
Eriss heart was filled with joy. He now knew that he had done the right thing by sparing the gargoyles life. God does indeed work in mysterious ways. He smiled to himself. I have something for you. Eris picked up a bundle that he had brought with him earlier. In my younger days. I used to be a very good tailor. He started to unravel the bundle. I thought perhaps if you had a cloak big enough. You might be able to crouch down and hide under it before turning into stone. He presented it to Tyessa. I used what scraps of cloth I could find from our belongings.
Tyessa looked at Eris with much surprise. She never would have thought of that on her own. She stood up and tried the garment on for size. The cloak covered her body perfectly; wings and all. I. I dont know what to say. She stammered. Thank you. Her eyes beamed with a brilliant glow.
The old man smiled back. Perhaps it is time for you to be on your way. There may be other poor souls in need of an angel this night. Eris took the gargoyles hand and kissed it softly.
May I come back to see you again some time? Tyessa asked.
I should be very sad if you did not. Eris smiled.
With a heart full of new found hope; Tyessa took to the night sky. She would not soon forget the lesson she had learned. Nor would she ever again turn away from her creed. From that night on, she would devote her life to being a guardian for the new world. Just like her all her people before her.
