I've not had this deck in my possession for too terribly long...however, I do not find it dark at all.
I was drawn in by the beauty of the artwork...and a gentle nudge (ok, maybe a huge push) from another Tarot reader... This deck is a rare find...indeed....the readings that come from it are so very strong...and not at all dark... Some might be challenged by the images, but those who take the time to really examine the artwork will be amazed at what they see....a true sensuality comes from this deck! I am amazed! I find that the Vargo Gothic Tarot reaches beyond the mundane, tactile world we live in; and it takes me to where love lives beyond this world. I remember when I was first viewing the Ten of Cups and thought This appears to provide a deviation from a standard interpretive theory which might discuss family and joy, or success. I see two eternal lovers sharing the deepest joys that can be had a deep joy from the depths of the souland life eternalyeah - see - I wanna be that guy Love that stretches beyond the grave
Is the Vargo Gothic Tarot a dark deck? What is a dark deck? Some are dark because of the palette, whereas some simply have a palate of imagery that creates darkness. Still some become known as dark in name only. The Vargo Gothic is dark in palette and imagery. That said, in a standard RWS deck, without looking at reversals, 25 of 78 cards have negative meanings. Thats 32%. We can get a very dark reading with a RWS! So why go dark? Not everybody relates well to the same pictures. I could care less about Picasso with three breasts and two eyes on one side of the face it does nothing for me. Norman Rockwell does nothing for me. Imagine a Norman Rockwell tarot? Imagine pathworking with a Norman Rockwell Tarot? Thatd be too funny Some sitters need to explore their dark side, and are unwilling to do so alone; a dark deck may help them see problems in a fresher light. As a reader, it may behoove you to be able to journey with them Does a dark deck produce dark readings? NO!!! Never confuse the deck and its imagery with the content of the reading. Besides whats dark about a love that stretches beyond the grave beyond time itself? 900 years is a heatbeat to a soul. But to those of us who are simply dust waiting to settle My goodness, its feeding time come here my love, you have such a lovelyneck |

there is beauty in darkness that cannot be found anywhere else. it lies in patient wait for those who have the heart to seek it, and rewards those who succeed beyond their wildest yearnings. darkness has too long been linked to evil, a thing the earliest Christian leaders did in an effort to force those few stubborn pagans into the "light" of their god. the only evil that lies in wait in darkness is Man and the things created by Man. I have never feared the darkness, never shuddered at it's approach nor dreaded the end of day. we are all creatures of light and dark, and too many of us bury our dark selves in an effort to deny our essences. to truly understand oneself, to be whole as a person, the darker side must be accepted and embraced. this deck draws upon that darker side, that oft neglected side. it brings to the surface deeper emotions and stronger tides of fate. there is nothing evil in that.
I revel in the use of this deck . . . though I too am careful whom I use it with. there are those who are repelled simply by the darker pallette . . . the images of things beyond the realm of death. those are the people who fear death, who jump at the merest of shadows. but for the special ones who chose this deck out of the 69 that I now own, they are the fearless ones who acknowledge that they are mortal, and that there is more waiting beyond that last gate. it is like a gift to them, this deck. this deck holds a special place in my altar, and rightly so. and I am eternally grateful to Mr. Vargo for having created and shared this gift with the rest of us. |

By simple definition, I would say Vargo's Gothic is a dark deck. There are some that are darker, but all things said, this is not a deck that I would use to read for just anyone. Why?
It is dark, and unless one has knowledge of the subjects depicted or represented in this deck, then it becomes a deck with lots of spooky pictures. It would be like serving creme brulee and being thanked for the pudding! So I save my Vargo for those who will appreciate. From a reading perspective I don't find it to be much different than any other decks, but I think the 'darkness' of the reading to be more of how it is presented rather than the cards themselves. ...all life is only a set of pictures in the brain, among which there is no difference betwixt those born of real things and those born of inward dreamings, and (there is) no cause to value one above the other."

Although I do not use the Gothic, my Heart and Soul, Jade just got a set. From where I am sitting, I have found them inspirationally beautiful with a grace and dignity Tarot cards should have. I can see where some might see them as being dark, but I would recommend that any that think that look past the colors and shades and see the immense artistry in the images and how they do read well. I feel more important then the cards is what the reader brings. Any Tarot set can be dark if that is what the reader brings. The absolute truth is that the Gothic Tarot is beautiful and looks to be very easy to read. If not for my Druidcraft set, I would be using them.

Is it dark? It certainly isn't all sweetness and light, but what deck is? I'm just beginning to work with this deck, so I haven't any great insights (yet!), but I hope it provides me with some.

Dark and light. I found those concept very subjective. It vary from one individual to another, from one culture to another (or subculture).
For me, the gothic tarot is. The rest is only representative of what we put into them. |

I think it was Edward Abby who said, "You cannot explore the darkness, by flooding it with light."
