Ok I was wondering if I should be sarcastic or not . The answer I came up with is this : since noone was specific about counting the half candles as halves or not , my two answers are A) 8 since a candle is a candle or B)5 and a half

Well, I would say that Thrall has three candles, since he took those to begin with.
After all the burning is done there should be eight candles that have five and half candles worth of burning left in them sitting on the door ledge. So if I were to total it all out that would be 11 candles with eight and a half candles worth of burning left. ...all life is only a set of pictures in the brain, among which there is no difference betwixt those born of real things and those born of inward dreamings, and (there is) no cause to value one above the other."

As some of you meddlesome mortals have guessed, the correct answer is three candles. I merely asked my sinister servant "How many candles would YOU have?" Since he only took three to begin with, nothing else matters. Thrall stood in the catacombs pondering this devious dilemma all night while the answer was literally in his own grasp.
