Latching onto scraps of findings old and new, creating a weak and feeble cloth of musical understanding. I will ask of you now. Tell me the treasures of the music of ambience most dark. Nox Arcana is my first finding that brought me to this gathering. Now I will draw as much as I can from you.
My thanks to those who remain nameless.

They look like GWAR but their sound is straight '80's hard rock. They are huge in Europe, once again showing that the Europeans have better music taste than the U.S. If you want real '80's style metal, this is a must-buy.
I know I often speak about the differences between goth rock and heavy metal, but one of the bands that bridges the two forms with ease is Paradise Lost. They created the entire gothic metal genre with their album "Gothic," which was death-metal rough but had power because of it. This is not some lame mainstream version of melancholy but full-on "sounds like a haunted cathedral" melancholy. Then they released "Icon," which refined their sound with better vocals...

The latest issue of "Revolver" has a cover story on AFI and like-minded "spookycore" bands. I don't really think that most of these bands are "goth rock," but I like several of them anyway*. I enjoy some pop-punk bands (which these bands are) so long as they are not sent through a mainstream blender first. Their first album, REMAINS, was straight-up darkwave. Their next release, WHERE SHADOWS LIE, was along the same lines, albeit more finessed.
"Goth metal." Two words that over the past few years have been mis-used to apply to any heavy metal band that featured atmosphere. Doesn't matter if the atmosphere was particularly brooding or not. For some reason, any metal band that featured a female vocalist (usually doing opera or something) and/or orchestral metal was tagged as "goth." Whether these bands had any resemblance to actual goth bands was beside the point. Incidentally, this was also where I first heard the exquisite The Gathering for the first time. Shortly thereafter I got both The Gathering's MANDYLION and LC's self-titled EP. The Gathering went off in an increasingly arty sound (which still rules and you should all check out, btw) and Lacuna Coil more or less stayed the course but remained a cult band.
I picked up Rob Zombie's new album Educated Horses today and like it. I think a lot of fans are not going to like it because it is a step away from the more overt schlock imagery. Nonetheless, I think it's the best thing he could have done at this point. I loved Hellbilly Deluxe but felt that The Sinister Urge had some good songs but was treading water. Educated Horses shows Zombie maturing a little but still firmly a rock and roll guy. The sound is more organic than on previous releases, and...
